Mayotte (French: Mayotte) is an overseas department and region of France consisting of a main island, Grande-Terre (or Maore), a smaller island, Petite-Terre (or Pamanzi), and several islets around these two. The archipelago is located in the northern Mozambique Channel, occupies an area of 374 sq. km. (144 sq. mi.) and has a population of around 212,645 people. Mayotte’s biggest city and prefecture is Mamoudzou. The territory is geographically part of the Comoro Islands, but the people of Mayotte chose to remain politically a part of France.

Mayotte is divided into 17 communes. There are also 19 cantons, each of which corresponds to one of the communes, except for the commune of Mamoudzou which is divided into three cantons.
