Rental income earned by nonresidents is taxed at a flat rate of 25%. Capital gains earned by nonresidents are taxed at a flat rate of 25%. Properties held for more than five years prior to resale may be subject to a special flat tax rate of 15%, if this method yields a lower tax liability. There are no inheritance taxes in Bangladesh. Residents are taxed on their worldwide income at progressive rates up to 25%.

Bangladesh declared independence from Pakistan in 1971. Bangladesh is a unitary parliamentary republic with an elected parliament called the Jatiyo Sangshad. Bangladesh is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. In 2014, the Bangladeshi general election was boycotted by major opposition parties, resulting in a parliament and government dominated by the Awami League and its smaller coalition partners. Bangladesh is the 7th most populous country in the world, and its population density 1,061 people per square kilometer is the highest of any developing country. Bangladesh has a rapidly growing market-based economy – it’s one of the world’s leading exporters of textiles and garments, fish, seafood and jute.

Bangladesh is divided into 7 administrative divisions, each named after their respective divisional headquarters. Divisions are subdivided into districts (zila). There are 64 districts in Bangladesh, each further subdivided into upazila (subdistricts) or thana.
