Finland’s population is around 5.5 million (2013). 90% are Finns speak Finnish. Finland is the eighth largest country in Europe and the most sparsely populated country in the European Union. Finland’s capital is city is Helsinki. About one million residents live in the Greater Helsinki area. Finland is composed of 336 municipalities and an autonomous region, the Åland Islands.
6 Regional State Administrative Agencies (RSSA) were created by Finland in 2010. Adding Ailand Islands brings the count to 7.
Finland consists of 19 regions called maakunta in Finnish + Ailand Islands. Finland is further divided into 70 sub-regional units called seutukunta in Finnish. The sub-regions are formed by groups of municipalities within the 19 regions of Finland. The fundamental administrative divisions of the country are the municipalities, which may also call themselves towns or cities.
