Global Perspective, Local Expertise.™
France is divided into 27 administrative regions: 22 regions in metropolitan France (including the territorial collectivity of Corsica), and 5 overseas collectivities (French Polynesia, Saint Barthélemy, Saint Martin, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, and Wallis and Futuna), plus 1 sui generis collectivity (New Caledonia), 1 overseas territory (French Southern and Antarctic Lands), and 1 island possession in the Pacific Ocean (Clipperton Island). French Polynesia is divided into 5 groups of islands: The Society Islands archipelago composed of the Windward Islands and the Leeward Islands, the Tuamotu Archipelago, the Gambier Islands, the Marquesas Islands and the Austral Islands. Among its 118 islands and atolls, 67 are inhabited. The most famous island, Tahiti, is located within the Society Islands archipelago. Tahiti is the most populous island and the seat of the capital of the collectivity; Pape’ete. Although not an integral part of its territory, Clipperton Island was administered from French Polynesia until 2007. The archipelago, part of the Melanesia subregion, includes the main island of Grande Terre, the Loyalty Islands, the Chesterfield Islands, the Belep archipelago, the Isle of Pines, and a few remote islets. The Chesterfield Islands are in the Coral Sea. Locals refer to Grande Terre as “Le Caillou” (“the stone”). Wallis and Futuna is a French island collectivity in the South Pacific with a land area of 142.42 sq. km. (54.99 sq. mi.) and a population of about 12,000. Mata-Utu is the capital and biggest city of Wallis and Futuna. Saint Barthélemy is an overseas collectivity of France, often abbreviated to Saint-Barth in French, or St. Barts or St. Barths in English. The indigenous people called the island Ouanalao. Saint Barthélemy, has an area of 25 sq. km. (9.7 sq. mi.) and a population of about 9,035 (2011). The capital of St. Barts is Gustavia.
